The Square Halo and Other Mysteries of Western Art, by Sally Fisher
Saints in Art, by Rosa Giorgi
How to Read a Painting: Lessons from the Old Masters, by Patrick De Rynck

They're all wonderful collections of paintings. I was more interested in the commentary, which was often pitched at a pretty low "accessible" level, unfortunately. I'm trying to find something more academic - in the sense of trusting the reader's attention span. Recommendations welcome.
